The Cure for Sleep Conversations

People are going back and forth across
the doorsill where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open
Don’t go back to sleep!

Rumi

My forthcoming book The Cure for Sleep (Weidenfeld & Nicolson) is full of threshold events, mine and others’: Those times when we are brought to a sudden need to choose, or we experience something which changes forever our perspective of life and how to live it…

Sudden near-death, terminal illness and bereavement; job loss; the arrival of great love at the wrong time; leaving and losing a place and people to gain an education; strangers who change the course of our lives in wonderful ways; what it takes to risk everything on a life’s ambition after a first half of life only passively wishing for it – and why it was worth it, all of it: all this and more occurs in The Cure for Sleep.

I’ve written the book to continue and extend the rich conversations I’ve had with so many people over the last five years of my late-starting writing life – and so it’s my hope that you and many other subscribers to last year’s Wild Patience Diaries here on my author site will be interested to join me now over on Substack, where I will be posting in future.

I’d be thrilled to have you with me in the lead up to next February’s launch. Here’s how to subscribe, and what will be happening…

The Cure for Sleep: Stories from (& beyond) the book

“DID I SEE IT? What people want to know when they learn about my sudden near-death at thirty-three. Yes, I saw a light, I say. It changed me. But not in ways that were quick of comfortable.”

The Cure for Sleep: a late-waking life

By subscribing to my new conversation area on Substack, you will receive the first page of the book as a welcome, and then once-monthly emails with longer extracts – as well as questions for you to consider, and suggestions for related reading around that month’s theme. There will also be some calls for submissions, giving you the chance to share a short true tale from one of your own life-changing moments.
